Complete Nitric Acid Plant

Technology: Uhde
y.o.m. 1967
Capacity: 224.000 t/year
Product: 53% HNO3

Mono, medium pressure plant (4,5bar) with 3 burners and
an absorption system of 4 packed columns

Equiped with a steam driven Parson compressor train with
a Curtiswheel and a DeNOx installation to reduce NOx
emissions to 200ppm

Steam system operates at a pressure of 20bar and is integrated
with site steam production grid

Summary plant process

Air compression
Air is compressed to 3.8 bar. The compressed air is split into two parts, 80% (primary air) is used for ammonia burning, 20 % (secondary air) is cooled and applied for degassing of produced acid.

Ammonia/air mixing
Liquid ammonia is vaporized into the gas phase, preheated and mixed with primary air in a 10 – 10.5 % proportion mixture.

Combustion process
The mixture is burned on a platinum/rhodium bed at 880° C to nitric oxides. Reaction heat is converted into 20 bar steam to heat the end gas. The nitric oxide gases are cooled.

Absorption
The nitric oxide gases are converted in the absorption towers into 54% nitric acid. The nitric acid is pumped into an acid degassing installation.

Acid degassing and storage
The nitric acid is degassed by reverse current of secondary air. The final product is stored in tanks.
